Beauty is a Luxury

Society today tells women that, in order to be beautiful, we need this tool and that product, this brand and these colors. We primp, we prime, we dab, and we smooth. Why? We're criticized no matter how much (or lack of) makeup we apply, how we style our hair, and how we look on a daily basis. Yet, we spend all this money on makeup, hair products and tools, teeth whitening agents, skin clearing, firming, and de-aging serums, nail polish, and numerous other beauty maintaining junk. It gets very expensive, and if you don't have the time, energy, and most importantly, the bank account, you're SOL. Anyone can be beautiful, but at what cost? In this society, being (stereotypically) beautiful is a luxury.

  1. Beauty is something that women have been taught they they need to buy. Media tells us that we must buy these products in order to change how we look while making ourselves look like it was natural. This creates a "flawless" appearance that is still critiqued by society. Those who cannot afford the hair and beauty products are made obvious, allowing class to be visible even in beauty.

  2. You are very right. That's what I was hoping to get across with this picture. It's funny how the new thing is to be "naturally beautiful" but it isn't really natural. There are so many things women are doing and using now to achieve that goal, so it still is artificial. It doesn't make sense.

  3. This picture is awesome, thank you so much for putting something out there like this. I would agree with you saying how us as woman get trampled with all these different products that we are supposed to use so we look "pretty" we are all naturally beautiful in our own ways and you did a great job at showing that in this picture!

  4. This is a great picture. I agree with you, I feel like beauty should not be determined by how much makeup you wear or how well you can do your hair. Beauty shoud be based on whats on the inside not the outside. And everyone is beautiful in their own way without using every product under the sun.

  5. I agree with you 100%. In todays society we are taught that the only way we can beautiful is by buying high end products to cover up our natural beauty. it's sad that without these products and more importantly the more expensive products, we are unable to fit into what society calls beautiful. It is a complete luxury.

  6. Very true! All people deserve to feel beautiful in their own right and not be put down because of the standards of today. Even if we all try to fit into society's idea of beauty, no one will ever be and feel 100 percent beautiful.

  7. This is a great picutre and example! I agree with you completely. The media makes all women think they need all the tools and products to be beautiful when really they are not needed at all. You can be yourself and still be very beautiful. Listening to the media can sometimes hurt you and leave you disappointed if you are not the exact match of what they say is beautiful which is why we shouldn't as women listen to them so much.Natural beauty is perfectly fine and in my opinion much more beautiful then covering yourself in product after product.
