How do you define beauty?

In the majority of advertisements the models are picked for “perfection.”  Their traits mirror those of “idealized beauty”:  blonde, sexy, tall, thin, white, and etc.  Embodying this “idealized beauty” is impossible, yet the pressures from society lead us to try.  We spend so much time striving to reach that point and no time appreciating ourselves and what makes us unique.

The photos I took are meant to challenge the idealized definition of beauty that we are presented with.  Why is blonde better than black? Why is tall better than short?  Why is thin better than curvy?  The answers are simple, one is not better than the other.  This is the mentality we need to move toward.  By tearing apart the image of “idealized beauty” we are able to see the distinctive characteristics of those that are hidden behind it.

  1. This issue is one that has been around for decades. I personally think everyone needs to classify themselves as beautiful, we shouldn't conform to society. Be comfortable in your own skin, don't conform to what society wants you to look like because then we would lose our individuality.

  2. I like how your image really challenged what society has led us to believe is beautiful. And how we spend so much time and money striving to fit in that category. When we should be embrassing our uniqueness.

  3. I have flipped through magazines and looked at these "perfect" woman and thought to myself, "I wish i had her hair, or her eyes, or her flat stomach" and so on. But those women in the magazine are not real; they are photoshopped. So how can I strive to be like a unrealistic woman. I love your message because women need to look in the mirror and start seeing how beautiful they are and not the image the media shows.

  4. Its true media has really corrupted us to think whats beautiful and whats not beautiful. Its time for people to realize media's mentality of beauty isn't correct. Beauty comes in all sorts of shape, color and size. Its time for women to be happy with not only their bodies but themselves.

  5. This picture is so true and I couldn't agree more with you, it is a really troubling situation that is happening with girls especially in our age group. it's not fair for us and we should all consider ourselves to be beautiful just the way we are!

  6. I agree with what you have mentioned and the picture you have captured. Many girls and women believe that they are not good enough because of their appearance. The media is what makes people think like this and it is something that they shouldn't. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and should appreciate themselves more and feel confident in their own skin.

  7. Media is to blame for all of this. Every woman is beautiful in their own way whether they are tall, short, black, white, blonde, brunette, etc. I feel like this will be an ongoing issue for a while still. It's been engraved in our heads since we were little girls, from anything to tv shows, movies, magazines to celebrities on these media sources. We need to have confidence and self esteem in ourselves to overcome this as women.
