Why is this sexy?

Since I started college this fall I have noticed that most girls that are out at parties are under dressed  for the Minnesota weather and that they think that it is sexy to get over intoxicated and act vulnerable around men. So because of that I decided to make my photo to represent what they look like. I think that people that act like this don't realize what they are doing to stereotype our gender females. If anything we should be showing people that we are strong independent women!

  1. This picture means a lot because I do notice how women (not all) wear clothes that barely cover them up. Today I saw a girl in a skirt that barely covered her rear end, and it was freezing out!

  2. this topic tends to confuse me.

I'm not sure if the critque should be
    a) wear more clothes to avoid being objectified.
or b) wear what you want because the problem lies with those doing the objectification.

though I do think that it is important to respect your body and keep it healthy, therefore I agree that excess drinking can be harmful.

    Interesting topic!

  3. I have a few things to say about this. 1: I believe that some women who act in "this way," do so because they are taught to do this through media, their friends, and basically the entire world. Women are taught to flaunt their body and get drunk, told they should wear little-to-no-clothing, and given the idea that dumbing themselves down will allow them to have a partner, sexual or romantic. Women are constantly objectified and this is one way in which it is shown. 2: I do agree that wearing little clothing and getting drunk in winter is not an all-together smart idea. However, as women, the last thing we should do is blame our sisters. If this is how a person wants to live their life, who are we to judge and blame? Slut shaming is something that should never be done. Ever. 3: Many people have not had the same chance to study Women Studies, that some of us have. It is my belief that people who don't study in the program, or who have otherwise learned of it, can't possibly understand these stereotypes, where they come from, what they mean, and how to adjust our own understanding of ourselves to deflect what society deems correct. 4: Please understand that I know where you are coming from. It can be difficult not to blame individuals who seem to perpetuate these stereotypes that are harmful to all. But, please also understand that it is not our job to blame these women for how they spend their time. Rather, we should try to have an easy-going conversation, as a friend, and as a sister-woman, to support and help our friends see where these stereotypes come from. Or, in my opinion, instead of blaming, keep an eye on your friend and be there if she needs your help. There is nothing wrong with wearing little clothing, nor with getting drunk. 5: If a woman wants to get drunk and be scantily clad, that is HER choice, and we shouldn't blame her for what we think is slutty. 6: If a woman wants to get drunk and be scantily clad, it is not her fault that other people are assuming she is slutty, or that they assume she wants sex. That is society's way of controlling women and patriarchy's way of assuming that if a woman is wearing little, that must mean she wants sex. 7: There is nothing wrong with being a woman, wearing little clothes, and being drunk. As long as it is safe, and consensual sex, a woman can have as much sex, drunk or otherwise, as she pleases and we should not judge her for that. More power to the woman who is confident in her sexuality, and has a lot of sex.

  4. This is a very interesting topic and picture. I have seen so many girls dressing up...or down, if you will on the weekends at parties, with liquor in both hands. Like Meghan mentioned in the above statement, it is a learned behavior through our society. It has been around for decades, and is something that most girls only know.

  5. The only reason young women do this when they get into college is because of the way the media makes college look for example parties everyday, get drunk and high and etc. Another reason women act the way they do when they come to an environment like college is because of the rumors they here from each individual who has attended college once upon a time or still currently in college.

  6. I completely agree with Meghan. Even though this type of behavior is frequently frowned upon, it's completely the woman's choice. We have the choice to wear what we want and drink how much we want. Our actions are completely up to us when it comes down to it. I can't say a whole lot more for the simple fact that it's already been said up above!
