Images of Soldiers

These days people probably do not feel that there is a problem with the way American Soldiers are shown in the mediaWhile soldiers are not usually shown in a negative manner, and we are respected and treated well, there is very little, if any diversity in the images of soldier shown.  Soldiers are only shown in war and once in a while at a welcome home cerimony.  We are never shown doing things regular civilians do.  We are never shown as having personal lives outside of our duties.  This picture serves as a gently reminder that soldiers are people too, and we do more than just fight wars.

  2. I think your picture actually takes it a step further. The fact that he's pictured comforting a small animal also challenges the hypermasculinity associated with the military. Your picture carries a complex message that were not used to seeing. Great job!

  3. I agree with Laura. Military is seen as tough, strong, and masculine people. And since he is holding a small animal, it shows his "soft" side. Great picture.

  4. I couldn't agree with you more Bryce. We are more then just soldiers, we are parents, husbands, wives, someone's child, students, full/part-time co-workers, volunteers, etc. As for Laura and Peyton comments, I also agree, As a soldier you are trained to be tough and work through the pain. The only pain visible is the one a unit share when they lose one of the family members, it speaks volumes.

  5. Your image challenges two typical portrayals of soldiers, the one you discussed in your explanation, and the portrayal of soldiers as solely agressive, killing machines. It is nice to be reminded that the man who fights in the pursuit of freedom is the same man who cuddles with his cat on the couch.
